The 2010 Namibian Women Summit will include the launch of House of Women (HOW) by the Founding Father of the Namibian Nation, Dr Sam S Nujoma. HOW is a new non-governmental organisation established by NWS. It is a platform for women empowerment working with specific core functions, such as capacity building, networking, and smart partnerships.
Why a new organisation?
In each NWS event, the participants have stressed a need for more capacity building for women throughout the country. The call has been to complement the summits with more extensive and sustained capacity building interventions. Work of this scope, however, cannot be undertaken by an informal structure which was born for the purpose of hosting an annual summit. The time has clearly come for a more stable organisation with a full-time secretariat and an elected Board of Directors as a governing body.
HOW facts
The purpose, vision, values, functions and strategy of HOW were agreed by NWS staff and roundtablers together. They are:
Purpose: A Platform for Women Empowerment
Vision: Broadening the Base of Women Involvement in National Development
Values: Quality, Professionalism, Ownership, Inclusiveness, Innovative
Way forward
HOW has an extensive agenda, and as a young NGO it will not be trying to achieve everything at once. Instead, a four-phased strategy has been developed to guide the organisation during the first three years of existence.
What will happen to NWS?
The Namibian Women Summit will continue as an annual event. It will be organised by HOW, as the flagship event of the organisation.
